Do Wealth Shocks Affect Health? New Evidence from the Housing Boom
نویسندگان
چکیده
We exploit large exogenous changes in housing wealth to examine the impact of wealth gains and losses on individual health. In UK household, panel data house price increases, which endow owners with greater wealth, lower the likelihood of home owners exhibiting a range of non-chronic health conditions and improve their self-assessed health with no effect on their psychological health. These effects are not transitory and persist over a 10-year period. Using a range of fixed effects models, we provide robust evidence that these results are not biased by reverse causality or omitted factors. For owners' wealth gains affect labour supply and leisure choices indicating that house price increases allow individuals to reduce intensity of work with commensurate health benefits. © 2016 The Authors. Do Family Wealth Shocks Affect Fertility Choices? Evidence from the Housing Market
This paper uses wealth changes driven by housing market variation to estimate the effect of family resources on fertility decisions. Using data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, we show that a $100,000 increase in housing wealth among homeowners causes a 16-18 percent increase in the probability of having a child. There is no evidence of an effect of MSA-level housing price growth on the...

متن کاملThe Impact of Parental Wealth on College Enrollment & Degree Attainment: Evidence from the Housing Boom & Bust
A long-standing policy goal of aid is to narrow, if not close, the parental income gap in children's subsequent educational attainment. Recent research indicates that credit constraints have played a larger role in college enrollment and completion rates over the past 15-20 years (Lochner and Monge-Naranjo, 2011; Lovenheim, 2011). Prior evidence found greater credit constraints in the US than C...

Do wealth shocks affect the health of the elderly in developed countries? The economic literature is sceptical about such effects which have so far only been found for poor retirees in poor countries. In this paper I show that wealth shocks also matter for the health of wealthy retirees in the US. I exploit the booms and busts in the US stock market as a natural experiment that generated consid...

This study, utilizing the MSIAH -VARX model, examines booms an...
